Understanding it
More than feeling sad
Depression isn’t just sadness. It can feel like heaviness, numbness, or running on empty: losing interest in things you used to enjoy, sleeping too much or too little, pulling away from people, or feeling like a burden.
Low mood often has roots: grief, burnout, big life changes, painful experiences, or patterns from the family you grew up in. Understanding those roots can make the weight feel less mysterious, and less like your fault.
You don’t need a diagnosis to start. If you’ve been feeling this way for a while, that’s reason enough to reach out.
You might be here because…
- Things you used to enjoy feel flat
- You’re tired all the time, even after rest
- It’s hard to get started, or to care
- You’re pulling away from the people around you
- You’re hard on yourself, or feel like a burden
- You feel stuck, numb, or disconnected
How we’ll work together
Small, steady steps
Every story is different, so our work is shaped around you. Here’s how my approach fits this work.
-
No need to have it together
Depression can make everything feel like effort. Sessions are a place where you don’t have to perform or pretend you’re fine.
-
Find the roots
We’ll explore what’s beneath the heaviness: losses, past experiences, and patterns that may be weighing on you.
-
Back into your body
Gentle mindfulness and body awareness can help you notice small shifts and feel a little more present, day to day.
-
Your relationships
Depression affects, and is affected by, the people around us. We’ll look at roles and patterns, and how to ask for the support you need.
Common questions
Questions people often ask
Is it depression, or am I just sad?
Sadness usually comes and goes. Depression tends to linger and color everything: your energy, sleep, interest in things, and how you see yourself. You don’t need to sort that out before reaching out; we can talk it through together.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. As a counselor, I don’t prescribe medication. If you’re wondering whether medication could help, your primary care doctor or a psychiatric provider is the right place to ask, and counseling can go hand in hand with that care.
What if I’m having thoughts of suicide?
Please reach out right away: call or text 988, or call 911 if you’re in immediate danger. I’m not able to provide crisis services, but once you’re safe, counseling can be a steady place to work through what’s underneath.
What if I don’t have the energy to come in?
That’s very common with depression. You can meet by secure video from home, anywhere in Arkansas, and we’ll go at whatever pace feels manageable.
Can counseling help if my low mood is tied to grief, burnout, or religious trauma?
Low mood often grows out of loss, exhaustion, or painful experiences, and we can work with whatever is underneath. My practice includes grief, life transitions, and religious trauma, too.
