Understanding it
The patterns we learned early
Many of us learned how to love, argue, and ask for what we need long before we had words for it. Those early lessons, from family, faith communities, or past relationships, can show up later as people pleasing, trouble saying no, choosing the same kind of partner, or feeling responsible for everyone else’s feelings.
Individual counseling is a place to look at those patterns from your side: what you bring, what you want, and where your limits are. You don’t need your partner or family in the room to change how you show up.
Boundaries aren’t walls. They’re how you stay connected to people while still being yourself.
You might be here because…
- You say yes when you mean no, then feel resentful
- You feel responsible for everyone else’s feelings
- The same relationship problems keep repeating
- Family visits leave you anxious or drained
- You’re not sure where you end and others begin
- You want boundaries without losing the people you love
How we’ll work together
Your side of the story
Every story is different, so our work is shaped around you. Here’s how my approach fits this work.
-
Your needs count too
We’ll make room for what you want and feel, without judgment, so your needs stop coming last.
-
Where the patterns started
We’ll explore how earlier relationships shaped the ones you’re in now, so you can start choosing differently.
-
The family system
Family systems ideas help us map roles, rules, and patterns, and find ways to stay connected without losing yourself.
-
Notice it in your body
Body awareness helps you recognize your own yes or no before you say it, and stay steady in hard conversations.
Common questions
Questions people often ask
Do you offer couples counseling?
No. I work one-on-one with adults, so I don’t offer couples or family sessions. Many people work on their relationships in individual counseling: we focus on your side of things, which is the part you can change.
Can I work on my relationship if my partner won’t come?
Yes. You don’t need anyone else in the room. Understanding your own patterns, needs, and boundaries often changes how you show up, and that can shift the relationship, too.
What are healthy boundaries?
Boundaries are the limits that protect your time, energy, body, and values: saying no, asking for space, or deciding what you will and won’t talk about. Healthy boundaries aren’t about controlling other people; they’re about choosing what you’ll do.
What if setting boundaries with my family feels impossible?
That’s very common, especially if you grew up in a family or high-control environment where boundaries weren’t allowed. We’ll go at your pace, start small, and practice what you want to say, so it starts to feel possible.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. I offer secure video sessions for anyone located in Arkansas, and in-person sessions at the Cozy Cottage in downtown Bentonville. If you live outside Arkansas, ask about coaching by video.
